The conservation volunteer opportunity, serving alongside other travelers and British citizens, was mixed with staying with several different British families for 8 weeks. All of my interactions changed my whole world view and the course of my life. Decisions that I’ve continuously made since that time I was 16 and am 42 now were shaped by that experience. And, in my opinion, it helped me to become a better, less selfish, less self centered, version of myself. However, I know that was not the case for all of the other students who traveled with us. It’s a matter of what your own heart is open for. I do not believe that all white kids have an attitude of entitlement or that they would be wasting their time or that they would not be welcomed. I do know for sure that many kids… of all skin tones… are just not at that place, mentally and emotionally, where they can really learn and grow from the experience, in the same way that I did. My life experiences to that point helped me have the kind of experience that I had, and I don’t think it had anything to do with my ethnic background or economic standing at that time. That is my opinion. I think it’s kind of sad that people who want to help, actually cause more work for the people they are trying to help. The voluntourists have really good hearts and are awesome because they want to volunteer, but I do understand why some would want an end to voluntourist work. I have never had a voluntourist experience. I’ve only helped out locally at nursing homes, etc. If I were a parent, I would be happy to let my child go on a trip similar to the one discussed. I think voluntourist jobs can be good depending on the work you do. If you send a group of high school students to build a house, they most likely won’t succeed. However, if the job is to spend time with a group of people and offer them the emotional support, then definitely go for it. Voluntourist jobs can be really beneficial if you just choose the right one. I think teen “voluntourism” is good and that schools should sponsor them.
